BrighterSite was inspired by a local mortgage advisor who grew his business exclusively through referrals. He was so proud of this fact that it became his tagline and was printed on his business cards. Twice a year, he would send letters to his satisfied clients with a stack of business cards asking for them to be handed out to friends and family. BrighterSite saw an opportunity to extend this campaign to a sophisticated online referral application utilizing the power and speed of electronic communications.

BrighterSite was founded in 2004 by lending, sales, technology and marketing professionals and is headquartered in Amesbury, MA. BrighterSite's management and staff bring years of collective experience in marketing, business strategy, information technology, and project management.

BrighterSite was originally launched and branded as ReferralSoft. The name and site change occurred in 2010.
